Don’t chant anything. Just breathe heavy and ragged. Maybe, if you can find them, get some contacts that look like cats eyes. Or do something to make your eyes red. Then stare at them with an expression like you’re almost brain dead, and be sure to tilt your head down ever-so-slightly so that you’re eyes are looking up. Growl a little, too.

Ghost Hunting with SAGAPS at The Historic Gadsden Hotel

This last weekend, the Southern Arizona Ghost and Paranormal Society (S.A.G.A.P.S) graciously invited me to tag along on their paranormal investigation of the splendid Gadsden Hotel in Douglas, AZ.

Upon entering the Gadsden Hotel, one is immediately transported into a bygone era and an opulent one at that. With its’ baroque ceilings, marble floors and soaring columns adorned with 24 kt. gold leaf, this historic hotel still remains a jeweled oasis in the desert. Most impressive are the dramatic, cascading marble staircase and the exquisite 42 foot-long Tiffany stained glass mural depiction of the Sonoran desert. Two stained glass skylights run the length of the lobby, filling it with golden light. Named after the Gadsden Purchase, notable guests of this “grand lady” have been Pancho Villa, actors Shelley Winters and Lee Marvin, as well as almost every Arizona governor.

It’s not only the old world luxury that makes the Gadsden Hotel so appealing. The hotel has the intimate feel of luxuriating in the mansion of an old, well-to-do friend. The hotel is owned by the Brekhus family and lovingly managed by Robin Brekhus. The friendly staff is very accommodating and report that they feel very much a part of the Brekhus family. Perhaps that’s why ghostly former employees do not wish to leave. The hotel’s El Conquistador Dining Room is a very popular spot for local residents as well as guests. You will enjoy the delicious, homestyle fare and the attentive service. The white tablecloths and tile murals adorning the walls of the dining room lend an air of elegance to one’s dining experience. My husband and I enjoyed languishing in our beautifully appointed jacuzzi tub suite with its’ own cozy sitting room. It was there that I conducted my interview with SAGAPS.
